Darker stories are having a moment, but trends often have a deeper origin.

From gothic and horror to dystopian and speculative fiction, readers are gravitating toward stories that explore fear, uncertainty, and emotional intensity, while still offering escape. Literary agent Ellen Goff is here to tell us why.

In this session, Ellen explores the rise of this trend from both a creative and industry perspective. You’ll get a clearer understanding of why these stories are resonating right now and what that means for writers working in (or who are curious about) darker genres.

Ellen will walk you through:
  • What defines “dark escapist fiction” across genres
  • How to recognize market shifts and where opportunities are emerging
  • Why readers are drawn to these emotionally intense narratives right now

Whether you’re already writing in darker genres or exploring them for the first time, this session will help you better position and strengthen your own work for the current publishing landscape.

Bonus Opportunities:

Participants will receive an exclusive submission opportunity to share their work with Ellen directly following the event!
