Oftentimes as writers, it can be difficult to decide what exactly to write about. After all, everything we experience in our daily lives can be potential topics for a good story. We figured we could help narrow down the choices a bit by providing you with eight prompts based on the images below.
Your task? Create a dazzling short story of at least 1,000 words. Feel free to write multiple pieces if you’re feeling spontaneous. Above all else, have fun!
Let’s say you’re a flower shop owner with an enchanted garden. Tell us what sort of secrets it holds or what adventures are born from there.
Imagine it’s the social season in the 1800’s and the time has arrived for your official debut into society. What would that event be like?
Suppose sewing was an activity you always looked forward to because it strengthened the bond between you and a family member, but it’s been hard to enjoy since they passed. What role does it play now, if at all?
What would happen if you were walking this path all by yourself and you suddenly heard a noise behind you?
You receive a letter from a friend that you didn’t part on good terms with; memories start to flood your mind and you’re pondering whether to respond. If you do respond, how will you do it?
Assume you rebel against tradition and open this door that your family has been guarding for generations, but no one knows what’s behind it. What would you discover?
You come to the same wisteria tree at the same time every year because of a promise you made, and so far, only you have kept. Who did you make the promise to, and what was it? What will your actions be going forward?
You’re waiting for someone to arrive for a cup of coffee. Who are they? A friend? Business partner? Potential love interest? Past love interest? Or maybe, you’re reminiscing about a conversation you’ve just had with the person who left. Who were they and how did it go?

Deborah Darden is a writer born and raised in Texas. She currently resides in Round Rock, just outside of Austin. She is a graduate of Full Sail University with a BFA in Creative Writing. Deborah has a passion for telling stories across different platforms and is currently working on a book series as well as a YouTube web series.
