Latinx Authors to Read and Celebrate

by WB Senior Intern Jackie Gonzalez

National Hispanic Heritage Month traditionally honors the cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latinx Americans celebrating the heritage rooted throughout Latin American countries.

As we celebrate and honor Hispanic Heritage Month, we’ve put together a list of 5 of our favorite Latinx authors and Writing Barn friends. Within this list, you’ll find a diverse range of authors that bring to life their intersectional identities, experiences, cultures, and histories throughout each page of their written works.

Gloria Amescua

Gloria has been writing poems and stories since she was a child, and now she’s crafted quite the impressive list of award-winning books. She enjoys writing books that reach a young person’s heart, mind, or tickles a funny bone.

Gloria’s lyrical picture book biography, Child of the Flower-Song People: Luz Jiménez, Daughter of the Nahua (2021), illustrated by Duncan Tonatiuh, was awarded a Pura Belpré Author Honor.  It was also a co-winner of the Américas Award, and received three International Latino Book Awards (English): Alda Flor Ada (Gold), Best Educational (Gold) and Most Inspirational (Bronze). It was listed as a Junior Library Guild Gold Selection, ALA Notable Books, SLJ’s Best Books 2021 and various other Best of Nonfiction/Informative lists for 2021/2022. Her book was also a 2022 SCBWI Golden Kite finalist for nonfiction text for Young Readers. Her poetry has also been published in a variety of literary journals and anthologies.

Debbie Zapata

Debbie grew up in a multi-cultural family in Austin, Texas, and often found herself hanging out at places that brought people together like public parks, community rec centers, and local libraries. Taking inspiration from her upbringing, Debbie believes that kids need characters who look like them and who overcome obstacles and make a difference in the world. Her uplifting debut picture book, Up and Adam, is a perfect example of how her characters celebrate diversity with heart and humor while doing extraordinary things. She also celebrates diversity by paying tribute to her Mexican American culture in her stories.

Debbie has received the Austin SCBWI Scholarship for Creators of Diverse Worlds in 2018 and 2020 and was one of the top finalists for the 2018 We Need Diverse Books (WNDB) Mentorship Contest.

Debbie attended Write. Submit. Support. sessions at The Writing Barn and shared her Success Story with us! Check out Debbie’s website here.
