Now Accepting Fall 2023 Interns

Come Intern with The Writing Barn in Austin, Texas!

Writing Barn

Interns at The Writing Barn (founded by celebrated author Bethany Hegedus) have the opportunity to gain professional insight into the literary industry from authors, agents, and editors of all genres. You will have the chance to help facilitate programming in a number of varying genres and will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the Austin literary community. Writing Barn internships will give you the experience you need to break into the literary industry as well as access to a number of different classes and events to help you continue to develop your skills as a writer.

The Writing Barn Internship lasts one full semester (5 months), with a time commitment of 10-15 hours a week. Currently, all Writing Barn staff are working from home in order to protect themselves and others, so all work will be done online and remotely. While the internship is unpaid, students can use it for college credit (non-students are also welcomed and encouraged to apply). Plus, we offer interns the chance to take classes at The Writing Barn for free.

Former interns make up half of the staff at the Writing Barn, so we asked them to share a little about their experiences.

Sophie Velasquez (Digital Marketing & Promotions/CTC Program Manager):

“I interned for The Writing Barn in 2016. The WB team provided me with support as a student and a writer, and we have maintained that amazing relationship since!

Now, I work remotely for The Writing Barn helping new interns thrive as members of our team, creative writers, and professionals.”

Jessica Hincapie (Program Director):

Jessica Hincapie, Writing Barn, Writing Barn Intern

“I started at the Writing Barn as an intern during my undergraduate degree at St. Edward’s University. The Writing Barn provided me with practical skills for not only my creative writing but also my professional development in the literary industry.

After receiving my MFA I was able to return to the Barn and am now Program Director. It’s been beyond rewarding and I’m excited to help the new writers who intern with us find their foothold in the industry.”

Katarina Rodriguez (Program Associate):

“I began my internship for The Writing Barn in the fall of 2021 while attending St. Edward’s University for my Bachelor of Arts in Writing & Rhetoric. The Writing Barn taught me so much about the importance of community as a writer, and allowed me to hone in on necessary skills as a creative and professional. Seeing how many writers they’ve helped at every stage of the journey has been quite inspiring.

When I was offered a position to continue working for The Writing Barn, I couldn’t say yes fast enough! I’m now a Program Associate, and I’m very excited to assist interns in their journey of being a creative writer and member of The Writing Barn.
