The Art of Storytelling

Everyone has a story to tell. Story can take many formats: fiction, non-fiction, narrative non-fiction, screenwriting, and play writing, to name a few. But are all stories worth telling? They are. If given the right amount of attention to craft, development and know-how.
Michael B. Druxman’s, The Art of Storytelling, being held at The Writing Barn on Saturday, September 21st will help writers with the process of taking a gem of an idea and see it through to a finished story that is both viable and commercial.
Among the topics discussed in-depth during this class will be:
What is Three-Act Structure and how does it differ from Plotting?
What are the methods for Building and Developing Believable Characters?
What is the secret of writing strong, realistic Dialogue?
Why is Conflict the most important element is developing a strong Plot?
What is the best way to handle Exposition?
What are the most effective Openings and Closings for a story?
The importance of Why?
Although the primary focus of this class will be screenplay writing, the techniques discussed are also applicable to narratives meant to become short stories, novels or stage plays.
Michael B. Druxman is a veteran Hollywood screenwriter whose credits include Cheyenne Warrior with Kelly Preston; Dillinger and Capone starring Martin Sheen and F. Murray Abraham; and The Doorway with Roy Scheider, which he also directed. Additionally, Mr. Druxman is the author of more than fifteen published books, including several nonfiction works about Hollywood, its movies, and the people who make them (e.g., Basil Rathbone: His Life and His Films, Make It Again, Sam: A Survey of Movie Remakes, One Good Film Deserves Another: A Survey of Movie Sequels, Merv [Griffin] and The Musical: From Broadway to Hollywood).
He has taught various dramatic writing and film appreciation courses in an adult university and is the author of How to Write a Story…Any Story: The Art of Storytelling, which has been used as a text in several colleges. He is often invited to speak to groups of aspiring film and television professionals to discuss screenwriting and the realities of show business. A native of Seattle who graduated from Garfield High School and the University of Washington, Mr. Druxman moved with his wife, Sandy, from Los Angeles to Austin, TX in 2009.
