What’s Happening in the Austin Book World, June 27 – July 2

It’s that time of Summer when everyone starts going on vacation, but for those of us staying in Austin – no worries. There are plenty of great events to attend that will keep you busy and entertained during the hot summer months. Check out what’s happening this week!

The Events:

justice-inc-coverOn Friday, June 27 stop by the Carousel Lounge from 9:00 p.m to 12:00 a.m, for a Punk Rock Book Launch Party for JUSTICE, INC., the debut short story collection by local author Dale Bridges. There will be live music from The Wet Brains and Austin punk rockers The Inflatable Baptists, as well as stand-up comedy by Nic Puente.

Also on Friday June 27 at 7:00 pm, there will be Young Adult Panel at Book People, made up of four, talented YA authors, all coming to talk about their acclaimed novels. The authors include Lindsay Cummings author of The Murder Complex, Julie Murphy author of Side Effects May Vary, Jennifer Mathieu author of The Truth About Alice, and finally author Kristin Rae author of Wish You Were Italian. That sounds like an event that should not be missed.

9780988634701Book People is hosting an event on Saturday, June 28 at 11:30 a.m. with BookPeople best-selling author Allison Amador & acclaimed Austin illustrator Tammy Stanley for a Special Storytime: GOODNIGHT AUSTIN. Sounds like an event for Austinites, young and old, to enjoy.

Malvern Books will also be hosting an event on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. The Lion & The Pirate Unplugged is an “inclusive (mic-less) open mic for writers and musicians.” The night should be a “fun and friendly evening suitable for performers of all ages and abilities!” Sounds like a great platform to showcase your talents.

On Sunday, Jun 29 at 7:00 p.m., Kick Butt Coffee hosts a Poetry Open Mic. Arrive 30 minutes early to sign up. What could be better than great coffee and food, and really talented poets? End your week on a creative note.

If you’re interested in Screenwriting, than check out this Screenwriters Master Class that starts Monday, Jun 30 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The Screenplay Workshop in Austin, TX will cover things from screenplay story structure to character and plot development and dialogue.9780812982787_p0_v1_s260x420

Also on Monday at 7:00 p.m., join Book People for a Stand Up Sit Down Book Club discussing Attempting Normal by Marc Maron. Join Flippo & Steve(n) every last Monday of the month at 7pm to discuss comedic literature and the memoirs of funny people.

 

What’s Happening at The Writing Barn

Our very own director, Bethany Hegedus, will be teaching a six-week class, Perfecting the Picture Book! The class features lessons by wonderful novelist and picture book author Bethany Hegedus, and students will get a chance to work on their own picture books-in-progress during workshop time. This class will meet on Tuesdays from 2-6 p.m., beginning on July 8. Register now! info@thewritingbarn.com

October 9-12, we will be hosting author and agent Ammi-Joan Paquette and author K.A. Holt to teach their workshop, Writing Outside the Box. This workshop will focus on non-traditional narrative structures and give participants the opportunity to dissect how other authors are telling their stories and even experiment with unusual ways of telling their own stories! There are only 16 spots in the class, so apply now!
