What’s Happening in the Austin Book World, August 1-7

The first week of August eases you back into the start of the school year with relaxed readings, evenings of poetry, and some pretty cool authors. Make sure to check out a few of these events- something for everyone. See you there!

The Events

On Saturday, August 2 at 4PM, Book People will host author Kate St. Clair for a speaking and signing over Spelled, the first novella to her new and exciting young adult series. Spelled follows Georgia Sayers and her attempt to find normalcy after the passing of her mother. However, due to misfortune, she soon learns that her life and the lives of her siblings were not at all what they had thought. They are witches and are capable of powerful and destructive magic. With secrets, lies, and dark magic- how will they ever be normal again?

On Monday, August 4 at 7PM, Austin authors Jesse Sublett and Broadus Spivey will be at Book People to present their new nonfiction, Broke, Not Broken. This true story concerns the legal case of rancher, Homer Maxey and his fight against the executives of Citizens National Bank of Lubbock over his land. Sublett has a long background in crime novels and nonfiction and has been published in the New York Times, Texan Monthly, and the Texas Observer with his journalistic pieces. Spivey has been practicing law for over fifty years. Beginning in Lubbock, he became familiar with both sides to Maxey’s case. Don’t miss this very interesting event with two awesome locals!

On Wednesday, August 6 at 7PM, Malvern Books presents visiting poets Joshua Marie Wilkinson and Zach Schomburg for a night of readings. Schomburg is the author of The Man Suit, Scary, No Scary, and Fjords Vol. I. He currently resides in Portland, Oregon where he runs Octopus Books. Wilkinson teaches poetry at The University of Arizona and has written Meadow Slasher, The Courier’s Archive & Hymnal, Swamp Isthmus, and Selenography. This is the night for all you Austin poets out there!

Also on Wednesday, August 6 at 7PM, Book People is excited to have authors Tim Bryant, Ben Rehder, and Reavis Wortham back for a fun-filled night of Texas and crime. Texas author, Bryant will be there will his latest book, Spirit Trap; Rehder, the crime novelist, with Get Busy Dying; award-winning, Wortham will present Vengeance Is Mine. Don’t miss these guys!
