This week’s events offer a smaller, more eclectic collection of readings. We have historic crime novels that deal with Nazi spy rings and we have twin brothers living in a glass city in an alternate-universe Russia. Check out the events and see which fit your tastes!
The Events
On Saturday the 19th at 4PM, Clinton Richmond will be at Book People signing and reading from his book, Fetch the Devil, which follows the true story of El Paso detective, Chris Fox, as he tries to uncover the truth about the 1938 murder of Hazel Frome and her daughter, Nancy. In his investigation, Fox finds that he’s pitted against not only local law enforcement but also an international Nazi spy ring.
On Sunday the 20th at 4PM, Book People will be hosting local author and co-creator of the comic strip, Over the Hedge, Michael Fry, in celebration of the newest book in his Odd Squad series, Odd Squad 3: King Karl. In this latest installment of the middle-grade series, the gang finds that, without a bully for the Safety Patrol to focus on, their talents are not being put to full use, and the arrival of a new student causes a rift in their group.
On Monday the 21st at 7PM at Book People, debut novelist, Josh Weil will be reading and signing from his book, The Great Glass Sea. In parts fantastical and tragic, The Great Glass Sea follows the story of two Russian brothers, Yarik and Dima, as they grow up in an alternate version of present-day Russia. Weil was named as one of the National Book Award’s “5 Under 35” and received the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction for his novela collection, The New Valley.
On Wednesday the 23rd at 7PM, Marcela Sulak and Jenny Browne will both be reading their poetry at Malvern Books. Sulak’s latest book of poetry, Immigrant, explores questions of displacement and also of food. It is a collection which strives for connection. Browne is the author of three collections of poetry, At Once, The Second Reason, and Dear Stranger.
On Thursday the 24th at 7PM, author Will Chancellor will be reading from his debut novel, A Brave Man Seven Storeys Tall, which follows the story of a father on a quest to find his adult son, who has seemingly vanished into thin air after a water polo injury.
