Cassandra Clare: Lady Midnight, A Shadowhunters Novel
About Cassandra Clare
Judith Rumelt, better known by her pen name Cassandra Clare, is an American author of young adult fiction, best known for her bestselling series The Mortal Instruments, a bite out of the larger, ever growing, Shadowhunter Series.
Cassandra Clare’s family moved around a lot when she was a child. She lived in France, England, and Switzerland all before she was ten years old. In order to cope with the constant movement, Cassandra says “she found familiarity in books and went everywhere with a book under her arm.” Cassandra began writing short stories in her early school years, simply to amuse her classmates. It was then that she wrote an epic novel called The Beautiful Cassandra, a short story based off one of Jane Austen’s works. It is here that the pen name, Cassandra Clare, was born.
About Lady Midnight, The Shadowhunter Series
Cassandra Clare’s newest book, Lady Midnight, is a new series that branches off from her original books, The Mortal Instruments. This book takes readers back in time to a place before Jace and Clary, the main characters in The Mortal Instruments, are even born.
During Q&A, Cassandra opened up about her difficulty with writing this particular book, due to the fact that it is her first “mystery novel.” The author jokingly wished that the “characters would just tell me what to do,” and cursed them for their silence. Cassandra said her favorite part about writing this novel, about writing all of her novels, is the fact that she gets to “live different lives through different characters.” She explained that it is this portion of fictional writing that she loves the most: the ability to live through your own, made–up characters, and the ability, or duty, to “put them through hell.”
Don’t miss out on the epic novels of Cassandra Clare, beginning with City of Bones from The Mortal Instuments. For more information on Cassandra Clare, and her Shadowhunter Series, click here.
