This Saturday, April 27, is Independent Bookstore Day and we’re elated because, like any other respectable literary business, we LOVE independent bookstores. In honor of the holiday we’ve organized this list of local bookstores for you to check out. Or not; it’s ultimately your choice, but if you ask us, you’re making the wrong one if you don’t check out these places…
First, there’s the reigning ultimate independent bookstore of Texas, BookPeople. BookPeople has been voted best bookstore in Austin for over 15 years and regularly hosts important and interesting authors (including some of our very own WB faculty).
If you’re a reader with feminist leanings, Austin is incredibly privileged to have BookWoman. Small and cozy, BookWoman not only offers a specialized collection of works on all things feminist, they also host book clubs and open mics the second Thursday of every month!
It’s a bit out of the way for Austin locals, but Lark and Owl Booksellers just opened in Georgetown and we’re stoked. It’s woman-owned, includes a bistro, and is located right next to Georgetown’s Monument Cafe. What more could you ask for?
Part bookstore, part community space, Malvern Books is an incredible indie bookstore perfect for readers who are looking to stray off the beaten path a bit and broaden their horizons.
Monkeywrench Books, last but not least, is a radical bookstore for the reader interested in revolutionary politics of any kind. It’s volunteer-run and located in the trendy North Loop neighborhood, so you can also stop by Epoch Coffee or go thrifting at Blue Velvet while you’re at it.
