Call for 2021 Teaching Artists!

Are you a published or agented writer? We need your expertise!

Do you live a thriving literary life and wish to share your unique expertise with a range of writers: from beginners, on-the-verge, and even fellow published writers? Is there a creative niche or particular subject you feel most writing programs often neglect?

Then pitch a class to the Writing Barn!

We’re currently in the process of creating programming for our 2021 calendar year and we would love to hear from talented teaching artists looking to share their craft and industry knowledge with the writers who choose to deepen their process here at The Writing Barn, in-person or online.

At the Writing Barn, we’re thrilled to have an incredibly talented and diverse community of teaching artists, who guide, champion, and deeply instruct.

Our instructors are either accomplished writers in their fields–poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, children’s literature, journalism, screenplay, and more–or experienced publishing industry professionals who can guide writers in both craft and career.

Creating Lesson Plans

Half-day classes range from 2.5-3 hours and include hands-on activities, plus time for discussion and/or sharing work. Six week classes, offer instruction and workshop and require instructors to offer feedback on 10+ pages of each participating writer’s manuscript or short story, and lead an in-class workshop discussion.

Online Classes

Online classes are taught in real time in our virtual Zoom classrooms. This keeps the instruction intimate yet accessible to writers across the country. We offer instructors tips and advice for online classroom management.

Learning About the Community

The best way to get a sense of The Writing Barn Community is to take a class yourself! We recommend that first-time instructors attend a half-day online class, a Write NOW! session online, or a Write Away Day in-person to experience the magic of the Barn.

Teaching Assistants

We try our best to assign a teaching assistant to each instructor to help with room prep, classroom materials, communication, etc. Our TA’s are often local writers well-versed in Writing Barn programming. Longtime Barn students, as well as Writing Barn Fellows, from around the country serve as TA’s for our online classes.
