Book Recommendations Based on Genres

“I have no idea what to read!” 

Be honest, we have all felt this way before. Sometimes you look at the pile of unread books, feel overwhelmed and then put off reading altogether. Other times, you might find yourself at your local bookstore with no idea of what to get. 

Well, no worries! We’ve put together a list of five great books based on a genre. Within this list you will hopefully find something that fits your current mood or piques your interest.

Mystery: A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder

A Good Girls Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson follows Pip who is doing a school project based on a local murder case that rocked the whole town. Pip is determined to truly solve the “solved” murder case of Andie Bell and Sal Singh even if it puts her own life at risk.


Romance: 10 Blind Dates

10 Blind Dates by Ashley Elston tells the story of Sophie who is unexpectedly broken up with and then flees to her grandparents house to spend the holidays and mend her broken heart. Sophie’s family wants to distract her from her recent breakup and decides to play matchmaker. Follow along as Sophie experiences 10 blind dates, some awkward, some charming, and some just plain strange.


Historical Fiction: My Policeman

My Policeman by Bethan Roberts is told from two points of view: Marion’s and Patrick’s. This story is set in Brighton, East Sussex in England in the 1950s and is about Tom Burgess, a policeman that is gay, yet Marion unknowing of Tom’s sexuality falls in love with him. Despite it being illegal, Tom and Patrick begin an affair. It is truly a heart wrenching tale. Bonus, it was recently turned into a movie!


Horror: 14 Ways to Die

14 Ways to Die by Vincent Ralph follows 17 year old Jessica who has won a spot on a reality show that follows her along as she lives her daily life. Jessica’s goal however, is not to be a reality star; instead it is to find the person who murdered her mother 10 years ago. Jess’s mother was the first victim of the Magpie Man and since then he has killed 13 victims. Will Jess be able to uncover her mother’s murderer?


Fantasy: The Selection

The Selection by Kiera Cass is a dystopian fantasy novel that is a mix between the Hunger Games and the Bachelor. It follows the life of America Singer, who has entered a competition that could elevate her family’s caste status by competing for Prince Maxon’s heart. America is in quite a dilemma as she is already involved with someone of a lower caste named Aspen, but their relationship is put to the test once she becomes selected as one of the 35 girls who hope to marry Prince Maxon. Soon to be on Netflix!
