Have you ever read a book you felt like your own heart could have written? Have you ever tried to write a picture book but feel like you or your audience just aren’t connecting to the story? Usually, that means you aren’t writing from enough of an authentic place. But, when picture books hold sincerity, you create a cord with your reader. Subsequently, this helps readers find themselves in your words and pictures.

Over six weeks, we work on why and how to put more of yourself into your stories. First, we analyze picture books with rich personal meaning to understand where ideas can come from. Then, students learn key exercises to help unlock the real stories they have to tell. Finally, we work on how to express those sentiments to evoke the greatest emotional impact with their readers.

Who should attend:

  • PB writers and/or PB illustrators who want to grow as storytellers.
  • or, PB writers and /or PB illustrators who want to improve showing emotion rather than telling it.
  • Fiction and/or nonfiction authors.
  • in addition, anyone interested in writing from personal experiences for kids.
  • or, Anyone who loves picture books with depth, heart, and meaning.

About Six-Week Classes:

6-week classes are 2-hour classes offered over a consecutive number of weeks. These classes assist writers in creating new work or revising existing work. The ultimate goal is to explore craft and potentially pursue publication. Registrants should plan to miss no more than 2 classes. Any more reduces opportunities to maximize learning and bonding with both the instructor and your peers. On-going classes usually have outside reading, homework assignments/analysis, and a workshop component. These classes cap at 18. Replays will be made available.
