Perfecting the Picture Book I is the perfect course for beginning writers who want to learn about the craft of writing picture books.

In this course students will:

  • Learn the fundamentals of what defines a picture book
  • Review the various types of picture book structures
  • Analyze successful picture books in today’s market
  • Perform exercises to plot a picture book manuscript
  • Engage in in-class writing time
  • Learn about word choice and economy of language
  • Discuss revision techniques
  • Draft a complete picture book manuscript
  • Receive a critique from your instructor on your picture book manuscript
  • Participate in writing workshops
  • Receive resources on writing query letters
  • Participate in discussion about the picture book industry
This program will analyze current picture books in the market, provide writing prompts, and offer in-class writing time. Through our six weeks together, writers will develop story ideas, draft a picture book manuscript, engage in class workshops, and receive a written critique from the instructor. We will also discuss query letters and the business of the publishing industry. Lisa will be available for support, encouragement, and questions throughout your time together.
Multi-Week Classes are 2-hour classes offered over consecutive weeks and assist writers in creating new work, or revising existing work with a goal toward exploring craft and potentially pursuing publication. Registrants should plan to not miss more than 1 class for maximum learning and class bonding, with both the published instructor and each other. On-going classes usually have outside reading, homework assignments/analysis, and a workshop component.

REPLAYS for online classes are available to writers who request them from the class TA due to absence, visual and hearing impairment, or to meet the needs of our neurodiverse writers (available for 30 days.) Multi-Week Classes are meant to be an organic experience that must be given full time and attention to help aid in the openness that is created within the LIVE learning environment.
